A)     Key Lessons

The purpose of John’s gospel is to help us believe in Jesus, and that by believing we may have life in His name.

·         Believing in Jesus is…

-          To be involved in the process of cultivating authentic faith, which perseveres.

-          Learning to trust that what Jesus said is true.

·         Having life in Jesus means…

-          To be on a transformative and exciting journey with Christ, which necessarily involves suffering.

B)     Key Application Questions

1)      (Quoting from the sermon): “We are not called to superficially believe all at once what Jesus has said; neither are we called to simply have “faith” and then to sort things out later. Rather, Jesus would have us struggle in faith with His teachings.”

As a LG, how can we help one another to better read and trust in God’s Word?

2)      On a scale of 1 to 10, to what extent would you describe your Christian journey as one that is transformative and exciting? Take this opportunity to encourage one another.

Digging Deeper into Scripture

Read John 20:30-31

These 2 verses clearly state for us John’s purpose in writing his gospel. In addition, they act as a conclusion to the immediate section in John 20, as well as for the whole gospel.

1)      According to verses 30 and 31, what can we expect when reading John’s gospel?

Immediate Context – Read John 20:1-29.

2)      What events take place in the immediate context? Try to give a brief summary.

3)      How is John’s purpose (according to John 20:30-31) achieved in this chapter?

4)      How are verses 30 and 31 a fitting conclusion to this section?

Bigger Context – Read John 1:1-18

5)      How does the introduction of John’s gospel tie in with the concluding statement in John 20:30-31? In what ways do they act as 2 brackets or bookends for the whole gospel?

MAIN IDEA: If possible, as a LG, agree on a sentence that captures the main idea for John 20:30-31.

APPLICATION: How can we live out John 20:30-31 in the coming week? How can we apply this Main Idea to our lives?
